How to include more hand lettering in your wedding details

There are many ways to put your personalized stamp on your wedding by incorporating a theme or an element that helps tie your details together. One of the simplest ways to add a personal and elegant touch to your wedding is to incorporate calligraphy. Here are some ways to add touches of hand lettering from start to finish.

Invitations

The invitations you choose will set the mood for your wedding and act as a first impression for your guests. Your invites say more than just date and location, and that’s a good thing! So what do your invites say exactly? For starters, your color scheme or theme, of course, but also whether your affair is black tie formal or flip flop friendly.

Isn’t calligraphy just for formal weddings?

Nope. Not at all. There are formal calligraphy fonts and casual modern fonts. Not only that, but invitations are considered more or less formal by other elements like wording and number of pieces and envelopes in your invitation suite.

Envelope Addressing

Envelope addressing tends to make the list of ‘most daunting wedding tasks’. It’s time consuming. And if you splurged on your invites, then actually writing on those babies can be a little intimidating! Sure you could pass the task along to a willing bridesmaid or relative and hope their handwriting is legible. There’s nothing wrong with that. But if your wedding budget allows it, its definitely worth considering a wedding calligrapher for the added peace of mind.

Place Cards

Escort cards help guide your guests to their seat and place cards greet them when they arrive. This is a great time to get creative and take advantage of your wedding theme. Try to stick with the same 2 or 3 fonts throughout your entire planning. This will help tie your details together as too many fonts will look distracting. Remember those gorgeous invites you picked out? Use those as a helpful guideline for the fonts you choose.

Wedding Signs

There are many, many signs to consider when choosing which signs to display at your wedding. First let’s talk about ceremony signs. There are welcome signs for the entrance, reserved seating signs, program signs, ‘dry your eyes’ signs for tissue displays, flower girl and ring bearer signs, and the list goes on. And on…

But don’t worry! There’s no need to try to incorporate every kind of sign into your wedding that you come across on Pinterest. (Talk about overwhelming!) Instead focus on a few that work well for you as a couple and work on making them beautiful. Less is more when it’s done right!

I once hand lettered a 3 foot by 12 foot scroll to be used as a wedding alter. That’s still one of my favorites!

Reception Signs

Now let’s talk reception signage. Like the ceremony signs, reception signs are optional. But by choosing a few well executed signs in matching fonts, you’ll only add to your decor not subtract. Here’s a list of popular sign options to get your started.

  • Escort display sign (please take your seat)
  • table numbers
  • buffet signs
  • bar signs
  • gifts and cards sign
  • photo booth signs
  • guest book sign
  • Mr. and Mrs. chair signs
  • favor display sign (love is sweet)
  • Parking or other directional signs

Keepsakes

Use calligraphy to turn some of your wedding details into keepsakes after your big day is over. Preserve your wedding vows while putting them on display in your home in beautiful writing. If your new beginning includes a new wedding album or couple’s bible, have it inscribed! Maybe a wooden name sign is that perfect finishing touch to your home now that you’re officially Mr. and Mrs. Congrats!!
